THIRTY DOLLAR PART SIDETRACKS MAKITA SCHEURING CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE

A faulty fuel pump that reared it’s head in the Pro Open final, sidelined both team riders, putting Robbie Malinoski’s championship run on delay for one round.

The weekend was a nonstop battle for teams and race officials, as heavy wind and rain pounded the Canterbury Park race site as it played host to the Air Force national. The track, which is traditional one longest and widest of the season, held plenty of snow throughout the weekend, but moisture content, poor

visibility and ever-changing conditions made it extremely tough on riders and equipment.

Despite the weather Canterbury Park, as is traditionally the case, was packed to the rafters with fans from the Minneapolis/St. Paul market.

Malinoski and Andrew Johnstad started the weekend strong, qualifying on the front row for the Pro Stock final. Malinoski was trapped in a mid-pack position early in the race and held on for a ninth, while Johnstad was involved in an incident and was scored as 15th.

Pro Open saw AJ rebound with a heat race win as both he and Robbie put in strong runs to again position themselves on the front row. Both riders’ machine began to cut out sporadically during the event, before nearly shutting down altogether. This was one of the few mechanical DNFs the team has suffered in recent years and was quickly identified as faulty fuel pump. “This is normally a part that we would not have to replace all season” said team owner Steve Scheuring. It was later learned that other teams experienced the same issue, but the timing could not have been worse.

On the bright side, the issue has been resolved and the team is back at full speed as they head for the Winter X-Games.
