POPULAR MECHANICS PICKS MAKITA CORDLESS IMPACT DRIVER AS "BEST OVERALL" BTD144 picked as "Best" out of nine top models

Popular Mechanics Magazine lined up nine cordless impact drives and put them to the test. When the dust settled, one tool stood out as BEST OVERALL: the Makita BTD144.

Popular Mechanics liked the Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-Speed Brushless Motor Impact Driver for its potent combination of small size, light weight, and powerful driving performance. They also liked the three speed settings, and the big numbers put up by the BTD144: 128 lag bolts driven in a single charge. Go here to read the review, which appeared in the June 2010 issue.

Powerful and Versatile
The powerful and versatile BTD144 cordless impact driver has a variable 3-speed power selection switch, providing the user with precise fastening control for a wide range of applications, from fastening cabinet screws to driving lag bolts.

  • Soft impact setting: 0-1,300 RPM and 0-1,300 IPM for small fasteners such as hinge screws for woodworking.
  • Medium impact setting: 0-2,000 RPM and 0-2,800 IPM for medium sized fasteners such as drywall screws.
  • Hard impact setting: 0-2,600 RPM and 0-3,400 IPM and 1,420 in. lbs. of Max Torque for large fasteners such as lag bolts.
Consistent with all of Makita’s impact products, the proprietary hammer and anvil impact mechanism in the BTD144 is manufactured using the best raw materials with the highest quality steel and unique heat hardening process for maximum fastening and driving power.

Makita’s Brushless Motor Technology delivers increased motor efficiency to provide up to 20% longer battery life per charge. With the motor’s more efficient power, the BTD144 has a more compact design at just 5-1/2” in length and only 3.3 lbs. with an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery.
