ROCKSTAR MAKITA'S JOHNSTAD RACES TO SIXTH IN NEW YORK

Pro riders Andrew Johnstad and Robbie Malinoski were once again front and center for the midway round of ACSS competition in Farmington, New York. Johnstad had finishes of 3-1 in his Pro Open qualifying rounds to earn the number two spot on the front row of the starting grid. Malinoski was not far behind, tying for the number three position.

At the start of the Pro Open final, Johnstad chose the very inside line, only to have another rider who qualified well back in the field pull his machine onto the snowbank crowding the line. As the green flag waved, Johnstad was forced into teammate Malinoski, causing a chain reaction that involved much of the front row.

Malinoski was able to separate himself from the pack but soon found his machine slowing. During the first turn melee, another sled rode across the back of his tunnel, slicing a heat exchanger and dumping all of the coolant from the motor. Malinoski soldiered on but ultimately was forced to retire when the engine seized up completely.

Meanwhile, Johnstad who was mired back in the pack put on a charge that saw him pick off riders one by one. At the finish Johnstad had fought to an impressive sixth overall.

Despite cold conditions and a threat of nasty weather, an overflow crowd filled the Finger Lakes Gaming Track during the two-day event. As in the past, the hearty New York crowd was out in full force to show their support of professional snocross.

Next event: February 12-13, Salem, New Hampshire.
