Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey showed the world that he's a world-class racing talent at the 64th running of the Motocross of Nations, hosted by Thunder Valley in Lakewood, Colorado, this weekend. Dungey took the individual MX1 class win as captain of Team USA, and was able to help keep the Chamberlin Trophy in America for another year. This marks the 21st time Team USA has taken home the top award in the Motocross of Nations, and the second year in a row that Dungey helped secure the win for America.
In front of a staggering crowd of 32,000 race fans, Dungey was the fastest in the MX1 practice session on Saturday, putting in the best time. Dungey was hopeful for a great showing in the qualifier, but suffered some setbacks that placed him fourth for the day. On Sunday, Dungey was determined to be back on top of the leader board.
Race 1 on Sunday featured the MX1 and MX2 class. Dungey got a great start and took over the lead by lap two of the race. True to form, he then dominated the rest of the race. Dungey won by a margin of 5.5 seconds, making it known to the world that he's one of the fastest racers anywhere. After Race 2, which Dungey was not a part of, Team USA was five points down in the standings behind Germany, but looking to change that in Race 3.
Dungey poured on the power of his Rockstar Makita Suzuki and shot out of the starting gate behind his MX3 teammate in Race 3. Dungey eventually took the lead and again conducted a riding seminar, winning the race 10 seconds ahead of second place.
“This weekend was quite amazing," Dungey said. "The track was rougher and better than yesterday. I felt the pressure from Cairoli in the beginning, but the line choice increased as the race went on. This is right at the top considering what I have won this year. Everything must go right to win at this event. It is hard to put into words, but it's like the experience of a lifetime. I felt like we really stuck together as a team and that helped a lot. We never quit and always kept pushing. I want to thank the team and everyone behind us."
Dungey and his championship-winning team will now have some well-deserved time off before preparations begin for the 2011 AMA Supercross series.
