The Journal of Light Construction(JLC) Magazine reviewed three-horse plunge routers in their June 2009 issue. The Makita 3612C was put up against Bosch, DeWalt, Festool, Freud, Hitachi, and Porter-Cable.
The reviewer ran a few tests which gauged the tolerance and quality of column bushings, accuracy (stability of router head) and raw power. These tests were done using 1-inch-diameter bits plowing through 5/8”-inch-deep groove. Then the top 3 tools were re-tested for validity.
In the end, Makita\'s 3612C was beaten only by the Festool, which according the review retails for nearly 3 times as much as the Makita and is a full 4 pounds heavier. JLC clearly liked the Makita 3612C, stating ,“It’s the runner up in both power and plunge smoothness and has the best body-mounted switch and a very quick motor brake.”
The Makita 3612C has the highest RPM range, maxing at 23,000. The 3612C is engineered with all ball bearing construction for longer tool life, and has convenience features including preset depth adjustments, soft start and chip deflector.
